Ethereum co founder Vitalik Buterin says he is pausing his trademark long form blog posts to focus on a science fiction novel exploring decentralized governance.

    Summary

    • Vitalik Buterin will step back from regular essays to write governance themed science fiction
    • The Ethereum co founder says he has already finished the first two chapters of the new novel
    • The move extends his governance and crypto writing into narrative fiction rather than technical essays

Ethereum (ETH) co founder Vitalik Buterin has announced that he will no longer publish regular blog posts and instead plans to “try writing some science fiction stories on the theme of decentralized governance,” according to a post shared from his Farcaster account vitalik.eth. The link he shared points to an in progress science fiction novel, where he noted that he has already completed chapters one and two and is now shifting his creative energy from essays and research notes into a sustained narrative project centered on governance experiments in crypto native systems.

The pivot marks a notable change for one of the industry’s most prolific public intellectuals, whose long form posts on topics ranging from Layer 2 scaling and account abstraction to soulbound tokens and governance tradeoffs have often set the agenda for Ethereum’s technical and social debates. By choosing science fiction as the medium, Buterin is effectively moving some of his thinking on decentralized governance out of the whitepaper and blog format and into speculative storytelling, using imagined worlds to probe the same questions about coordination, incentives and power distribution that have animated his past writing.

In an ideal world all software and hardware would have “nutrition labels” that provide a full list of trust dependencies – what math and which actors’ honest behavior (and on what time scale) the system is relying on to provide its core functionality and implied guarantees. https://t.co/89paTXDiIL

From governance essays to governance worlds

For years, Buterin’s essays have dissected governance design in everything from DAOs and Layer 2 rollups to nation states and voting systems, often arguing that overly centralized control undermines both resilience and legitimacy in crypto ecosystems. Shifting that inquiry into fiction gives him room to test edge cases that would be difficult or irresponsible to trial directly on mainnet, by placing governance mechanisms inside hypothetical societies, networks and crisis scenarios and letting them play out in narrative form.

That approach fits a broader tradition in which science fiction has served as an experimental lab for political and economic ideas, with authors using imagined futures to stress test coordination mechanisms, social contracts and technological constraints. In Buterin’s case, a novel on decentralized governance can fold in lived experience from Ethereum’s own governance history, including contentious hard forks, funding debates and protocol upgrades, but refracted through fictional characters and worlds rather than core dev calls and forum posts.

    Ethereum’s narrative, literally

The announcement lands at a time when Ethereum and broader crypto markets are wrestling with governance questions on multiple fronts, from protocol level upgrades to how DAOs handle treasuries, legal exposure and voter apathy. While Buterin is not abandoning technical work, stepping away from regular blog output suggests that future contributions to the governance conversation may arrive first as stories rather than as formal proposals or essays.

For Ethereum’s community, that introduces a different kind of influence vector: instead of dense posts that only protocol insiders read, a science fiction novel on decentralized governance can reach a wider audience of builders, policymakers and readers who encounter these ideas in a more accessible, narrative driven form. Whether the experiment ultimately changes how people design on chain governance or simply adds a new layer to Buterin’s already sprawling body of work, the decision signals that Ethereum’s most visible thinker now sees fiction as a serious venue for working through the hardest problems of decentralized power.
